After isolating an issue on your Mac to a possible hardware issue, you can use Apple Diagnostics to help determine which hardware component might be causing the issue. Apple Diagnostics also suggests solutions and helps you contact Apple Support for assistance.

This application will allow the user to select the number of test loops, as well as the amount of memory to test. There is a 'Log' tab that will allow the user to monitor memory testing. The user can toggle a 'verbose' switch to limit the amount of output, and can also choose to quit Finder and other applications. This app consists of games that focus on improving the user’s memory, problem-solving. To perform the test, simply open Cinebench and click Run next to the OpenGL test in the top-lefthand corner of the app. It'll take you through the test, and your final result will be displayed.

If your Mac was introduced before June 2013, it uses Apple Hardware Test instead.

How to use Apple Diagnostics

  1. Disconnect all external devices except keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet connection (if applicable), and connection to AC power.
  2. Make sure that your Mac is on a hard, flat, stable surface with good ventilation.
  3. Shut down your Mac.
  4. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard. Keep holding until you see a screen asking you to choose your language. When Apple Diagnostics knows your language, it displays a progress bar indicating that it's checking your Mac:
  5. Checking your Mac takes 2 or 3 minutes. If any issues are found, Apple Diagnostics suggests solutions and provides reference codes. Note the reference codes before continuing.
  6. Choose from these options:
    • To repeat the test, click ”Run the test again” or press Command (⌘)-R.
    • For more information, including details about your service and support options, click ”Get started” or press Command-G.
    • To restart your Mac, click Restart or press R.
    • To shut down, click Shut Down or press S.

If you choose to get more information, your Mac starts up from macOS Recovery and displays a web page asking you to choose your country or region. Click ”Agree to send” to send your serial number and reference codes to Apple. Then follow the onscreen service and support instructions. When you're done, you can choose Restart or Shut Down from the Apple menu.

This step requires an Internet connection. If you're not connected to the Internet, you'll see a page describing how to get connected.

Application

Hey

If you have a new or old Mac, you may want to test out is memory. Although you will not need to do this every single day, once in a while is a good idea. Currently there are three applications out there that can do this for you. I am going to focus on one application. The three applications are Apples Memory Test, Memtest and Rember.

Apples Memory test, accessed from your install disk, does a basic memory test, but it is widely regarded as inaccurate. A good one to start out on, but is flawed. One of the best memory testing applications is Memtest. This program will test your computers RAM the most effectively. The only problem with memtest is that it costs $1.39. As well as this it is also a command line application. As a result it may not be suitable for everyone.

The final application, which I will review in this post is Rember. It is both free and as a GUI. Perfect for every day needs. If you head over the site and duzi the app you will be presented with a shot similar to the image below.

Apple Memory Test

Rember will test all of your free memory. As a result if you have a lot of RAM hogging apps open it wont test a lot of RAM. As a result you will want to run this on an account with the most basic of apps open. But a basic account does yield good results. You will be presented with a screen similar to the one below if the pass succeed. It does take a while to run the more memory you have. So if you have a lot of RAM prepare to wait.

A good little application which you can use to test new memory as well as current memory. Its not prefect but it does a good job. If know of any other good RAM testing applications please leave a comment below.
